Symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
(GERD)
The most common symptom is a burning sensation in the upper part of the abdomen or the lower part of the chest. This is commonly known as 'heartburn'. This may also include the sensation of food or liquid coming up into the throat or mouth (regurgitation), especially when bending over or lying down. These symptoms may be accompanied by a bitter or acid taste. However, gastroesophageal reflux disease can also cause hoarseness, difficulty in swallowing and even asthma. As coronary artery disease or ischaemic heart disease can also result in a burning feeling in the chest, in some people the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease may be confused with cardiac (heart ) pain.
